On December 14, we finally return to the strikingly beautiful planet Pandora.
The thirteen-year wait is soon over. In December, we will return to the strikingly beautiful Pandora and let James Cameron sweep us on new adventures. After a few days of exclusive cinema screenings, the first teaser trailer for “Avatar: The Way of Water” was made available online Monday by Disney.
Expectations for the film are high. Maybe unreasonably high? After all, the first “Avatar” from 2009 is a very unique success, something as unusual as an original film without a comic book model or something else, which has become a massive success in cinemas. With $ 2.8 billion in revenue, the film is still the most lucrative of all time. Only “Avengers: Endgame” is nearby, but there, on the other hand, ten years of MCU movies have built up the hype.
If “Avatar: The Way of Water” manages to draw in half as much as its predecessor, it will already be a great success for Disney. Like Christmas’s big movie, it has all the prerequisites – the only question is whether the audience is still curious about more, or whether thirteen years of waiting has dampened interest. This winter we will find out.
The big deal with this film, directed and produced by James Cameron, is once again the 3D element. While Avatar made 3D a big deal in 2009, ushering in a new era of cinema, Disney will have to re-energize audiences’ enthusiasm for the format.
At least we already know that more is on the way. “Avatar 3” has already been shot and is scheduled to premiere in the winter of 2024. Two more sequels are written and will be released in 2026 and 2028.
