Andy Dufresne is sent to the Shawshank prison after he is blamed for the murder of his wife and her lover. In the prison, Andy has to face the "Sisters" (a group of prisoners that beat and rapes newcomers) and the corrupted warden Sam Norton, who uses Andy's bank skills to help him with his money-laundering operations. Still, Andy manages to impress most of his fellow inmates, as he appears to have an incredible amount of hope. His friend, Red, tells him how hope can destroy a man, but Andy is unable to believe that hope will give up. Eventually Andy manages to do the best things and brings integrity, happiness, and hope to most of the inmates at Shawshank. Everything comes to a simple thing for Andy and Red, either get busy living... or get busy dying.
